We remember two stalwarts

Dr. Parasuraman

Dr. Parasuraman was a well respected and loved linguist, educator, and science communicator whose lifelong mission was to make science accessible to all through the power of language. A leading figure in Tamil linguistics and a guiding force in the Puducherry Science Forum, he firmly believed that knowledge should transcend linguistic barriers. Through his dedication, he translated and authored more than 30 science books in simple Tamil, enabling countless readers to understand and appreciate science in their own language. He also served as a mentor and leader in various linguistic and writers’ associations across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, nurturing a generation of science enthusiasts and young learners. He was deeply involved in training teachers, guiding students, and inspiring scientific curiosity at the grassroots level. His humility, ever-smiling presence, and unwavering commitment to promoting scientific temper continue to remain an enduring source of inspiration for all of us at Pondicherry Science Forum.

Thomas Pragasam

Thomas Pragasam, (1941 to 2017) was one of the great founders and inspirations for the Pondicherry Science Forum. He was born on July 4th, 1941 and passed away in 3rd October 2017, at the age of 76 years. His formal occupation was as the Head Sarasdar in the Judicial Department, but he was one of the great science amateurs and innovators. He was well known for his work as a radio ham-enthusiast, and for time was president of the Ham association. He was a nature lover with special skills in cultivation of cacti and bonsai. He had a science laboratory where he did many experiments and taught experimental skills and electronic design and repairs to interested students. With the government he worked for introduction of mangroves in the estuaries near Puducherry and the design and establishment of the Rockery at the far end of the Promenade beach. He was one of the first persons to join PSF in 1985 and he remained active in the organisation till the very end. He married in 1965 and this was a long standing loving lifetime partnership. We are also proud to note that his daughter Alice and son-in-law Maran and son Theist have carried the tradition and continue to help PSF organise childrens science festivals and many other activities and his son.

"With words as his tools and knowledge as his purpose, he built bridges between science and society"
